Questions

Answers about dual-fuel

What is a dual-fuel system?

A heat pump and a gas furnace installed together. The heat pump heats and cools. The furnace runs only when it is cold enough that the furnace is the better choice.

At what temperature does the furnace take over?

It depends on the house, the equipment and what gas and electricity cost you. We set it at the install, write it down and can change it later.

Can I keep my current furnace?

Often, if it is in good condition and the coil and ducts fit. We check at the visit and tell you plainly if it should go.

Will it work with my ducts?

Usually, but we look at them first. Leaky or undersized ducts get in the way of any system, and we say so before quoting.

Is dual-fuel right if I have no gas?

No. Without gas there is nothing for the furnace to burn. A heat pump on its own, or another system, may fit better, and we'll say so.

What does emergency or auxiliary heat mean on my thermostat?

Settings differ by system. We label what each one does on your thermostat and leave it written down.

Do you handle rebates?

Ask us what your state or utility offers. Programs change, and we won't promise an amount.

What if I smell gas or my carbon monoxide alarm sounds?

Get everyone outside and call 911 first. Call us after the gas utility or the fire department says it is safe.

How often should the system be serviced?

Twice a year: the heat pump before the cooling season and the furnace before the heating season.

Do I need a permit?

Most replacements need a county permit. We pull it and list it on the quote.

Still have a question?
